More than Just a Summer Job

Durant Harvin

My name is Durant Harvin and I am a summer intern in the corporate communications department at Sodexo’s North American headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD. My time at Sodexo has been a great experience that will benefit me as I enter the real world — especially since I finish up my undergraduate studies at Penn State University next spring.

I am honored to be part of the Sodexo Future Leaders Internship Program. It’s great that I am being paid to gain experience that I would actually be more than willing to gain for free. What more could I ask for? Not only do I get to gain on the job experience but I also get to save money for my senior year at Penn State. Accepting this internship was “no brainer” if you will.

During my internship, I have been involved in areas such as social media, internal communications, brand management and marketing. I have also been charged with the task of creating an ad campaign for the internship program nationally. I have also done plenty of hands on work such as video editing, market research, technical writing, posting signage and conducting on-camera interviews.

I am gaining so much knowledge as to how a large company’s communications setting works. There is no doubt in my mind that the tools and skills I am acquiring here at Sodexo will do nothing but benefit me in my future professional endeavors.  I have had the opportunity to meet and work with several great and accomplished Sodexo employees which have ranged from chefs to executive personnel at headquarters.

During my internship I was privileged enough to be asked to work at the Sodexo Foundation Dinner in Washington, DC. This was an experience that I will never forget because of the many people I came into contact with and the large roll I was entrusted with throughout the evening. I was charged with interviewing the award recipients before the awards dinner. My interviews started off a little shaky but once the nerves were gone they turned out well.

This internship has provided a way to apply all that I learn in the classroom to an actual real-world setting. I truly feel I am a part of the communications team and that my work actually has worth.

I would like to give a special thanks to my hosting manager Laurie Kelly. Laurie has been a great manager who pushed me to think more creatively. There is never a time when I felt that I was just here to perform busy work, Laurie treats me as if I were a full-time employee. I am grateful to have a manager who is available and reliable (despite her already hectic schedule!)

Getting Flexible in 2012

Kelly Raw

As I started this brand new year, I reflected back on 2011 and thought to myself: “Am I taking advantage of every possible opportunity that I have?”.  Many of us have opportunities to be involved in our communities or our companies and often may not take full advantage of them.  I reflected on my opportunities with Sodexo, a company that I have worked for over 4 years and am proud to be a part of.  I then went to the Sodexo website and was instantly reminded of all the great things our company does. The Sodexo Foundation, countless sustainability initiatives across the country and across the world, and mentoring programs.  It’s so nice to say that I work for a company that has values and goals that align with my own.

I was already aware of much of what Sodexo does, but was not aware of all the opportunities through the Flexibility Works! program that is available for employees.  I knew that the team I worked with at the unit level would be okay for the occasional doctor’s appointment or leaving to pick someone up at the airport, but I had no idea that our company has a more structured way of adding flexibility to our lives.  With the Flexibility Works! program, one can consider both occasional scheduling, as well as propose an alternative work schedule which fits both their personal and professional life.  I am only a few years into my professional career but have often wondered, what will happen with my work schedule if I have a baby in the years to come?  What if I’d like to coach a little league team?  It’s so nice to know that the company I work for has already thought of that for me.  This boosts morale and can benefit the business at the same time.

After discovering this awesome flexible opportunity offered by Sodexo, I decided to ask a few friends of mine if their companies offered something similar.  A formal flexibility program was not offered by their companies and they began asking if Sodexo was hiring after finding out about the program!  It’s reassuring that my job does not have to be 9-to-5 every day (or 8-to-8, depending on the day!).  Sodexo does such a nice job of helping those in need across the country with the Sodexo Foundation and with the sustainability efforts, it’s nice to know that they are constantly finding ways to improve the lives of people both internally and externally.

The Jazzman’s Cafe & Bakery Team: “We Can All Make a Difference!”

Jazzman's STOP Hunger Coffee Tumblers

Having worked for Sodexo for over 25 years, I see a lot of food on a daily basis. Seeing so much food so often, I sometimes take for granted that I am blessed with the means to provide nutritious food for me and my family. But there are millions of Americans who are not as fortunate and it is through no fault of their own. Especially in today’s economy when so many are losing jobs on a daily basis. You just never know when something could happen in your life that could lead to the inability to provide for your family.  Can you imagine not being able to feed your kids? How would you cope?

Childhood hunger affects every community. Seventeen million children in America are at-risk of hunger, leading to a domino affect in their lives – from failing grades to poor health, there are no positives. As a brand manager for Jazzman’s Café & Bakery, which has over 200 locations, I realized I had an opportunity to make a significant impact in someone’s life by simply asking for support from our guests.

After speaking with my colleague, Bill Kehler, who runs our Pandini’s restaurant in Germantown, Maryland, I learned about the Backpack Food Program. This program sends at-risk kids home with nutritious, easy to prepare meals on weekends and holidays. It lifts some of the burden from parents and caregivers to ensure nutritious meals are available when kids are not in school. Since 2009, Pandini’s has been packing backpacks every Thursday and delivering them to the Water’s Landing Elementary School in Germantown. They have provided over 3,000 meals to at-risk children. This inspired me to pitch in!

Our local Jazzman’s teams have been making tremendous strides to help their communities, from collecting monetary donations and canned goods to donating excess food to their local food banks. Now, we are reaching out to our guests. It is so easy to help!  Donate your time at your local soup kitchen, school or summer camp.  Make a financial contribution to your local food bank. Or, stop at Jazzman’s for a cup of our latest Noteworthy Coffee, Sumatra Arinagata, or purchase a STOP Hunger logoed tumbler. A portion of the proceeds from both will go directly towards meals for children. In addition, The Sodexo Foundation is offering $5,000 scholarships to students in kindergarten through graduate school who are driving awareness and mobilizing to support hunger initiatives. Selected students also receive a $5,000 grant for the hunger-related charity of their choice!

If there is one thing I have learned from this experience is that we can all make a difference. We just need to use our resources, be creative and work together.
